He owned a grocer's business in Tottenham which flourished and he from time to time left it in the charge of his foreman whilst undertaking his missionary work in Great Britain and Ireland until in 1821 at the age of 67 retired from his business and undertook a series of extensive missionary efforts on the continent, Russia and the US before returning to his home in Tottenham London where he ended his days.
