Sobre este artículo
New York: Printed for the Author. Good+. 1852. Second Edition. Hardcover. Steel engraved frontis portrait, woodcut illustrations, folding map on blue paper in rear of Little and Big Boom Rivers (torn with some browning at fold). Interesting full page illustration of a slave ship. George Thompson, an American anti-slavery activist, provides a first-hand account of his work at the Mendi Mission in Western Africa. Formed after the Amisted affair in the U. S., this mission was an attempt to provide a Christian presence in the region. Thompson provides a look at the customs, life, and manners of the Africans, observations on African slavery and the slave trade, animals, wars, etc. In the form of entries from his journal. An uncommon book on western Africa. The book is free of foxing, but there is very light marginal dampstaining to a number of pages. Covers mottled, but generally in good, tight condition. Old owner name in pencil on end paper dated May 1852. Edition stated on title page--must have been issued in the first year of publication. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 356 pages .
