[Arctic Biblio 7943, Howgego III J1]. Frederick George Jackson (1860-1938) a British arctic explorer of Siberia and leader of the 1894-97 Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to explore Franz-Joseph Land (Royal Geographical Society). During that expedition, Jackson found Fridtjof Nansen, who was presumed lost and dead, and helped direct him to safety and home. This book is about the 1000 consecutive days spent in the remote Arctic from Jackson's journals and notes. From the Arctic Bibliography, "The author's journal (p. 5-775) records day by day, July 12, 1894-Sept. 3, 1897, the course and events of the expedition, describes in detail the hunting, weather, ice conditions, the polar night and its effects, pony and dog sledging, the terrain, health, food, etc." From Howgego, Jackson's book inspired Amundsen and provided details on Arctic survival, and inspired Shackleton to take horses to Antarctica on the Nimrod Expedition.
