Sobre este artículo
London: Thomas Bowles, [c.1702 - 1735] [Joseph Smith].. Three large 18th Century prints of St. Paul's, published by Tho. Bowles. 1) On a decorative cartouche in the upper left: "The South Prospect of ye Cathredal of St. Paul's London. .... and now Published in the First Year of Our Soveraine Lady Queen Anne 1702. Will. Emmett Fecit." At lower left: "Sould by Tho. Bowles in St. Paul's Churchyard." At lower right: the plate number: IV. The image measures 69 x 45 cm; the paper is 75.5 x 54 cm. // 2) On a decorative cartouche at the bottom center (printed on a strip affixed to the base of the folio plate): "St. Pauls. The East prospect. Wm. Emmitt Fecit". Beneath the cartouche is the French caption: "Veue de derrierre de L'Eglise de St. Paul a Londres." In lower left: "Sould by The Bowls in St. Paul's Church-yard." In lower right: "J. Simon Sculpt" and the plate number: V. The image measures 46 x 60.5 cm.; the paper is 53 x 76 cm. // 3) Captioned twice, vertically and horizontally: "The Foundation or Ground-plat of St. Paul's Church". At lower left: "Sould by The Bowles in St. Paul's Church yard" and the plate number: IX (or XI). The image measures 40 x 70 cm.; the sheet is 53 x 78 cm. The South and East views are on laid paper which has toned quite noticeably to a yellowish; the Ground-plat [sic] is on laid paper which is still quite white. Some short tears to edges, and at folds where the prints were once bound into folio volumes, but condition is clean and very good overall. Plate marks evident on all; plates have been twice-folded when issued. Publication details are a little hazy, but we believe these are taken from an edition of Joseph Smith's "Britannia Illustrata or Nouveau Theatre de la Grande Bretagne (1715, 1724). The East and South prospects are by William Emmett (mis-spelled "Emmitt" on the East prospect); the artist of the foundation plate is not identified. The South prospect cartouche mis-spells Cathedral as "Cathredal" - an error one might expect to see corrected in subsequent editions. Very scarce. For the three:
