Embossed African lion to rear board (?). Wrinkling to cloth. Chocolate brown, clay-based endpapers. Both hinges started (showing mull beneath), but still very solidly bound. 551 pages and an 8-page section at the rear, advertising other books by this publisher. Some smudging and soiling to pages. Black and white illustrations, head and tail pieces at the start of every chapter. The book has been republished numerous times, but this early copy is not all that far removed from the time when the events within occurred - or, umm, were embellished (?). Original pictorial, decorative cover Cloth wrinkled on front cover. Internally clean. Many illustrations, by W. Croome "and other distinguished artists". Signature dated 1883. A good, solid, late-nineteenth century READING COPY. Amusing, surprisingly readable. The previous owner of this book was Greer(n?) Elliott, of Barbourville, Kentucky, was ten years old when he wrote his name on the front free endpaper, and dated it October 18, 1883.
