Paris, Kaeppelin &: Cie, 1854. Lithographed folding map, 61 x 86.5 cm, original hand colour in outline, dissected into 21 panels and laid on linen, folding into contemporary cloth covers, slightly sunned, with a printed paper label in English: ‘Seat of War, Map of the Ottoman Empire in Europe and Asia’. No importer or reseller’s name is given, but our example was evidently supplied for an English market. With an inset of Sevastopol, it covers the region at the outbreak of the Crimean War of 1854-56, when it seemed likely that fighting would take place within the Ottoman Empire. Invading Russian forces withdrew before the British and French arrived in support of the Turks - which is when the Allies to took the decision to invade the Crimea - but it accounts for the broad geographical scope of our map.
