Every page has a beautifully decorated engraved border: angels, cherubim, seraphim at the top and an open bible centered among flourishes at the bottom. There are also several hundred full page black and white engraved illustrations. Dark brown endpapers. Covers are brown cloth with bevelled edges. They are decorated with gilt titles and illustrations and black decorations. Ingram Cobbin (1777 - 1851) was an English minister. When ill heath forced his retirement from the pulpit, he turned to writing hymns and biblical and scholastic works. This book is in good condition. The cover has some light wear and the corners are definitely worn. The previous owner's name is written on the inside of the front cover and his seal is affixed to the front cover. The pages are clear of any markings crisp and white. One of 1000 sets printed on Japon vellum (The Apochrypha is one of 1250 copies) from a total edition of 1075 copies. The typography was arranged by Frances Meynell. Each volume decorated with copperplate engravings by Stephen Gooden, including the title pages. A lovely clean set finely bound in recent full black morocco, decorative gilt border to boards. Spines with raised bands, each with decorative gilt piping and ruling. Red title labels, gilt. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. A beautiful set.

Very Good 1714, Hamburg Germany. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered, among other things. It is four inches by seven inches, and includes 104 plates from engravings, 52 in the Old Testament, and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text, plus the eight page introduction. Also, all the plates are on unnumbered pages, for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine, which are still attached but fragile. All pages, including all front and rear endpapers, are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges, and several pages inside have edge tears or stains, but they are minimal. Some offsetting from the wrappers to adjacent endleaves at edges, crown and toe of spine of wrapper chipped away, some occasional smudges, otherwise a lovely copy in original state. Second (enlarged) edition, after the much more modest list printed by William Bowyer in 1777. The entire work is an amplification, according to the subtitle, of "A Manuscript List of English Bibles, copied from one compiled by the late Joseph Ames. presented to the Lambeth-Library by Dr. Gifford ....," with "later Discoveries of several Learned Gentlemen ...." The identity of the actual printer is not recorded in ESTC. Ducarel was the first lay librarian at Lambeth, serving some 27 years beginning in 1757. While well represented institutionally, copies, particularly when in this near original condition, are uncommon in commerce. ESTC T96267.

Xantes Pagnino was a 15th-century Dominican friar known for his studies in biblical philology. While his edition of the Hebrew Bible is considered his best work, he published a biblical thesaurus which was written to aid in the reading of the Hebrew texts. This 1578 printing of Pagnino's Hebrew/Latin "Thesaurus linguæ sanctæ" was published by Christopher Plantin.
