First American Edition of this gripping account of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14 led by Sir Douglas Mawson to King George V Land and Adelie Land, the almost entirely unexplored section of the Antarctic continent immediately south of Australia. In addition to carrying out geographical exploration and scientific studies, the expedition was to visit the South Magnetic Pole. On one excursion in 1912 Mawson lost one of his two companions, Ninnis, down a crevice together with six of their best dogs, most of their food rations, and some of their best supplies. Forced to use their remaining dogs as food, they began to suffer from symptoms brought on by ingesting husky liver containing extremely high levels of Vitamin A. The book measures 225mm tall x 158mm and has 180 pages, 29 b/w photos. This book was privately printed by the author to present to friends and associates. It was never for sale. Stimson was Secretary Of War under Taft from 1911 to 1913, a colonel of the 31st Field Artillery in WWI, Governor General of the Philippines, Secretary of State 1929-1933, and Secretary Of War from 1940 to 1949 under Roosevelt. Acknowledging all Churchill's other accolades, we tend to overlook his claims as a writer of travel. A fine example is at hand in 'My African Journey', the story of his 1908 excursion in Kenya and Uganda.

'My African Journey' is notable for being the only book of his to have photographs possibly taken by the author. Churchill profited from his trip by serializing articles in The Strand Magazine and publishing a book. Hodder and Stoughton published 'My African Journey' in 1908, which added significantly more content than was in the serialized articles.

Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates.
