Sobre este artículo

The First UK printing published by The Queen Anne Press, London in 1953. Limited edition, with this being number '182' of only 500 copies. The BOOK is in Near Fine condition. Publisher's black buckram, gilt lettered red spine label, the publisher's initials in gilt to both boards with the top edge crimson red. Very mild offsetting to the end papers with a barely discernible pencilled inscription having been erased to the upper front blank end paper. Clean internally. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Very slight edge-wear with a slither of loss at the spine ends. Some small nicks and tiny closed tears with one 3cm closed tear to the lower rear edge which has been reinforced with a small amount of tape to the verso. Only light toning to the spine. The wrapper design looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. A colour frontispiece and three illustrations to the head of the chapters by John Craxton. Three 'meditations' on monastic life: 'The Abbey at St. Wandrille de Fontanelle', 'From Solesmes to La Grande Trappe' and 'The Rock Monasteries of Cappadocia'. The first appearance of this work, the author's second book. A handsome production and this is a very attractive example which is uncommon with the original wrapper. The trade edition, issued by John Murray, was not published until much later in 1957. Accompanied by The 'Times Literary Supplement (TLS) dated 24th July 1953' which reviews this title. The TLS is complete but has been folded. Collectible. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Sinopsis

Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915-2011) was an intrepid traveler, a heroic soldier, and a writer with a unique prose style. After his stormy schooldays, followed by the walk across Europe to Constantinople that begins in A Time of Gifts (1977) and continues through Between the Woods and the Water (1986), he lived and traveled in the Balkans and the Greek Archipelago. His books Mani (1958) and Roumeli (1966) attest to his deep interest in languages and remote places. In the Second World War he joined the Irish Guards, became a liaison officer in Albania, and fought in Greece and Crete. He was awarded the DSO and OBE. He lived partly in Greece—in the house he designed with his wife, Joan, in an olive grove in the Mani—and partly in Worcestershire. He was knighted in 2004 for his services to literature and to British–Greek relations. Karen Armstrong , a historian of religion, spent seven years in a Roman Catholic religious order; she has written about this experience in Through the Narrow Gate and The Spiral Staircase . She is also the author of many books, including A History of God , The Great Transformation , and, most recently, The Bible: A Biography.
