It first appeared in print when it was serialized in the January, February, March, and April 1979 issues of Analog Science Fiction / Science Fact magazine with cover art (Jan) and eight interior illustrations by Paul Lehr. It won the 1979 Analog Award for Best Serial Novel or Novella, the 1980 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, was runner-up for 1980 Hugo Award for Best Novel, and was nominated for the Nebula and Ditmar awards.

They find themselves inside a bizarre world inhabited by centaurs, harpies, and constantly shifting environments and discover that Gaea has been watching television signals from Earth and is obsessed by movies from Hollywood's Golden Age.
