Tobacco Road, Caldwell, Erskine. Published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1948. Autograph edition with facsimile signature of Caldwell on jacket and embossed in gilt front board. Quarter black leather over grey tweed boards, gilt spine titles, red top edge. Tiny red ink star free endpaper and otherwise volume is in fine condition. Tiny chips to tail and head of unclipped jacket which is otherwise fine.
First published in 1932, Tobacco Road is set in rural Georgia, during the worst years of the Great Depression. It depicts a family of poor white tenant farmers, one of the many small Southern cotton farmers made redundant by the industrialization of production and the migration into cities.
