Jerome K. Jerome is best known for works such as Three Men in a Boat or Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, but he also wrote countless other stories, novels and essay collections that many people have forgotten about.

Probably among the most underrated of these stories are the three tales depicted in Told After Supper, a collection of ghost stories that, of course, happen on Christmas Eve, and are accompanied by the characteristic, unmistakably masterful writing style of Jerome ? a leading author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The stories themselves are written in such a way that they flow perfectly together. From Teddy Biffles' story to the narrator's own account about his encounter with a ghost that was particularly proud of all the crimes he had single handedly performed throughout the years, all the stories have a somewhat grotesque element, while being kept entirely tasteful and quite humorous in some respects.

Jerome's way with words and his approach to first person narration have made all the accounts presented in the book sound quite life-like, their genuine feel and the rich, unique texture of each story drawing the reader in further and further, until becoming completely immersed into the simple, yet somewhat hypnotic set of short tales.

While this book is not considered to be at the height of Jerome's usual standards, it definitely delivers when it comes to providing elements of clever, witty and quit dark humor, while linking all the aspects of the Christmas ghost storytelling tradition with elements of the supernatural to create what can only be described as a true literary masterpiece.
