Taine came to believe as a youth that knowledge must be based on sense experience, observation, and controlled experiment, a conviction that guided his career. Teaching at the cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (186483), he earned a reputation as one of the most esteemed exponents of 19th-century French positivism with his attempts to apply the scientific method to the study of the humanities. Translated from the French by J. Safford Fiske. Brown leather covers with gilt title in decorative face on front cover and in gilt on spine. Spine is rubbed and chipped at raised bands, at lower gilt medallions. Front cover is detached; has previously been repaired with heavy adhesive tape (as has inside back hinge), some of which remains on inside front cover. Internally, ffep and half title pages loose, chipped at edges and toned; and other pages toned at edges.

Heavy external wear with a horizontal tear to the spine covering, fabric separated along front joint, wearthrough at corners and spine ends, chips to spine ends, hinges inexpertly reglued but secure, text block sound, pages clean with just a couple of instances of finger soil to margins, decorative name stamp at bottom of engraved title page, no other markings. This book is from a collection of alpine and mountaineering books owned by Jeffery and Beverly Parrette who traveled the world climbing challenging peaks and often presented the books to one another as gifts.. The boards are well preserved with light scuffing to the edges and bumped corners. The gilt is vibrant and intact. The front endpaper is missing. The hinges are shaken but the binding remains sound.
