In this book about the styles and ideas of architecture, an effort has been help the reader look at the city as an entity which expresses certain ideals. The individual monuments; the buildings, thus become part of a whole. The cities are not all treated in the same fashion or according to a particular method. The chapters are as varied as the subjects, for there are no two cities in the world that are identical.

The book is illustrated with many black and white drawings throughout the book. Most of the town plans are scaled to 1:20,000 for easy over-all comparison; several famous places are reduced to 1:2000 for closer comparison. The buildings are for the most part presented in three views: the fist, en face; then the same view, minus the fa�ade; and finally a top view, as if the upper stories had been removed. The result is a picture not of static fa�ade and monument but of rooms and houses and towns where people live.
