Paris: Barrois, 1785. ~Original full mottled calf, gilt decor and lettering to spine, rubbed, one red gilt label per spine. Small shelf labels near tops of spines. Gilt decor to board edges, rubbed. Small 8vos (10.4 x 17cm). All edges speckled red, top edges darkened. Endpapers marbled in Placard pattern. Very minor worm damage to front and rear endpapers of vol. I at base of gutter, small hole extending through to front board. Worm damage continues through bottom margin of first 65pp. of vol. I, after prelims as tiny pinhole only. Endpapers uncracked at gutters, hinges firm. Bookplate of St. Benedict's Priory to inside front board of both vols. Minor dampstaining to rear free endpaper of vol. I at bottom corner, affecting preceding blank endpage only. Half-titles to both vols. Decorative head-pieces and tail-pieces. A little scattered foxing throughout. Louis-Pierre Saint-Martin (1753-1819), French priest, revolutionary, and magistrate. Saint-Martin was to become an active participant in the French Revolution, during which he served as chaplain of the National Guard. Later defrocked, he served as a magistrate in Liege during the period of the French Empire and became a prominent Freemason. On his death, he was refused a religious funeral by the local clergy, forcing his family to arrange a civil ceremony. ~Robust packaging. All UK orders trackable, others on request.
