The story stops in places like the flatlands of Missouri and the windswept coast of Canada. The novel deals with struggle and the incredible courage and perseverance to overcome, at time, overwhelming odds. This wonderful novel by the winner of the national Book Award mixes fictional characters with actual historical figures in historical settings. A wonderful collectible by an author who many considerer the next great Irish author.
Sinopsis
Colum McCann is the internationally bestselling author of the novels Let the Great World Spin, Zoli, Dancer, This Side of Brightness, and Songdogs, as well as two critically acclaimed story collections. His fiction has been published in thirty-five languages. He has received many honors, including the National Book Award, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government, and the Ireland Fund of Monaco Literary Award in Memory of Princess Grace. He has been named one of Esquire ’s “Best & Brightest,” and his short film Everything in This Country Must was nominated for an Oscar in 2005. A contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Paris Review, he teaches in the Hunter College MFA Creative Writing Program. He lives in New York City with his wife and their three children.

I've noticed a trend in my recent reading life toward what I call "paired readings." My field of interest is Irish literature, the classics like Liam O'Flaherty as well as contemporary writers like Colum McCann. However, I found the historical characters in this book so intriguing that I was led to read something I believed to be outside my sphere of interest, "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass." And I am so glad that I finally read this American classic.
Douglass was a character in McCann's skillfully written novel, as were aviators Alcock & Brown and the late-20th century U.S. senator George Mitchell. I will leave it to future readers to discover how these characters meld into one captivating story with Ireland always in the background as the catalyst to bind the divergent plots and characters together.
