FIRST EDITION 1589, Italian text, small 4to, approximately 220 x 160 mm, 8¾ x 6¼ inches, author's large pictorial emblem on title page, printer's device on colophon, large decorated or historiated initials, 2 headpieces and a tailpiece, 9 woodcut astronomical diagrams in the text, 2 almost full page, and pages of tide tables, pages: 1-224, [4] - Address to the Readers by Raimondo (1 page), Errata on 2 pages and colophon on final page, bound in vellum over board, raised bands and gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, marbled endpapers. Boards very lightly marked and bowing very slightly, small ex libris label (Pierre Duhem, philosopher) on verso front endpaper, pale brown stain to lower margins from title page (where it touches the imprint) to first page of text, fading to nothing, lower margin of O2v faintly marked, leaves Cc2--Ee2 very faintly damp stained to fore-edge margins and slighlty affecting text with no loss of legibility, very small chip to fore-edge margin of Cc2, another very small pale stain to edge of lower margin of Cc1-Ee6, otherwise contents very clean. A very good copy of an uncommon early book on the ebb and flow of tides plus a brief section on the movement of trepidation of the eighth sphere and another which is a supplementary declaration to the rule of Giovanni Bianchini for finding the altitude or latitude of the poles. Raimondo was an Italian mathematician and scholar born in Verona in 1505 or 1506 (d. 1591?). Little is known of his long life but he wrote on astrology, geomancy, physics and astronomy as well as fluid dynamics. Sotheran's Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematica, Volume II, 13844, reports a French comment that this Trattato on the tides was Raimondo's best work published at the age of 84, and that it is rare. The ex libris label on the front endpaper is that of Pierre Duhem (1861 1916) a French physicist, mathematician, historian and philosopher of science, who made major contributions to the science of his day, particularly in the fields of hydrodynamics, elasticity, and thermodynamics.
