When Cid Ricketts Sumner read a personal in the Saturday Review inviting recruits for an expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers, she answered it, reasoning: "Why not? Sixty-four is the right age for adventure- youth the time for caution, considering how much it has to lose." So it was that she found herself one woman in a party of seven boatmen and photographers on a voyage by rubber raft along the course Major Powell had taken in 1869- the purpose of the Eggert-Hatch River Expedition being to record the ancient beauty of the canyon country before engineers moved in to dam and control its waters.
