Sobre este artículo
London:: Methuen & Co. Ltd.,.. Not illustrated; iv; 56+ 8-page publisher’s catalogue: “A Few of Messrs. Methuen’s Publications.” . 8vo, white paper-covered boards; dust jacket, spine of which is very slightly darkened; text block fore-edge uncut and with some foxing; outer bottom corner of front cover bumped. The “travelling” in this case is confined to travel from Britain to the Continent of Europe and the methods described are cross channel boats and trains, comparisons made, particularly in food served, do not favor British travel. On eating on trains always go for the first sitting—food will be fresher and the car less choked by cigar and cigarette smoke. Accommodations, always arrange before leaving home and get written confirmation. Language issues—acknowledging that the British were appalling linguists, try to learn a few French and German phrases; French will suffice throughout most of southern Europe and north Africa (this was a period when French was the “lingua franca” of the civilized world. Gellibrand suggests a smattering of German would help in the Scandinavian countriesIt is amusing to consider all the details one had to check when preparing to travel, that, for the most part, we can accomplish today with the aid of our smart ‘phones.
