Small quarto, gray cloth with gold lettering on spine and gold line drawing of Mark Twain on the cover, archival mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped) with colored watercolor vignettes of places Twain visited, scarlet endpapers, 448 pages. Weight: 2 lbs. 1/2 oz. Charles Neider (1915 - 2001) was a Russian-American writer, known for One-Eyed Jacks (1961) and Unterwegs zur Familie Mann (2001). He also edited several authorial collections by Washington Irving, a prolific essayist, novelist, nature writer and Mark Twain scholar, died on Wednesday at his home in Princeton, N.J. He was 86. Mr. Neider edited and annotated a dozen anthologies of Twain's short stories, humorous sketches, essays, travel books, novels and letters, as well as ''The Autobiography of Mark Twain,'' published in 1959. Compiled from material in Albert Bigelow Paine and Bernard De Voto's earlier Twain autobiographies, with nearly 40,000 additional words of Twain's unpublished anecdotes and observations. SUPERIOR CONDITION: tight, bright, clean copy. Dust jacket is bright with very slight soil on the rear panel.
