Sobre este artículo
Norman, Oklahoma. (1973): University of Oklahoma Press. First Edition. Octavo. Translated by W. Robert Nitski, Edited by Savoie Lottinville. 456 pages, index, bibliography. 456 pages, index, bibliography. The full story of German explorers in the American West has never been told. Year by year, however, it gradually emerges as scholars unearth new sources to address the problem. One of the most appealing scholarly detective stories has been the search for the lost journals, field notes, manuscripts, diagrams and drawings of Friedrich Paul Wilhelm, Duke of Wurttemberg. The search began when William G. Bek of the University of North Dakota translated and published Duke Paul's First Journey to North America in the Years 1822 to 1824 in the South Dakota Historical Collections in 1938. His publication also included tantalizing information as to the whereabouts of a much greater cache of Duke Paul materials. Since that time few of these have come to light which is unfortunate since the Duke, a great traveler, scientist, arid collector, visited the West seven times before the Civil War and undoubtedly recorded as much as any other single individual of his time. A near fine copy bound in rust cloth, spine lettering gilt over black, no names or bookplates, in unclipped pictorial dust jacket lettered in yellow and white, jacket lightly rubbed.
