Gabet and Huc, Lazarists attached to the mission of Si-Wang, were dispatched to examine the nature & extent of the Apost- olic Vicariat established by the Pope in 1844. They suffered incredible hardships and dangers, and succeeded not only in the rare feat of reaching Lhasa, but even settling there un- til the Chinese minister had them deported.
