London: Joseph Mawman, 1802. First Edition . Hardcover. Vg/No Jacket. 4to. Volume I: xxiv, 396 pgs. Frontis and 7 plates, with the "bear fighting" plate inserted as frontis in Volume II. Large folding map called for in Volume II is bound into Vol.I. Volume II: viii, 380 pgs. Frontis and 8 plates (5 in colour) plus examples of Finland and Lapland music. 2 volumes in early 20th century half leather bindings, with noted misbound plate & map, contemporary bookplate in each volume, typical offsetting from plates, map hinges tender. Acerbi (1773-1846) was an Italian naturalist and composer, and this record of early travels in Scandinavia describes the customs of the people, detailed observations on natural history, with much on the people of Lapland in Volume II. His travels were considered remarkable at the time having explored and documenting life in remote areas little visited by travellers. Additional photos available if required. Inquiries welcome.
