Plates all "del" or "invenit" by Gravelot or Cochin, with various engravers named.. 232 by 153mm Volume III (of IV) octavo "en brochure", uncut thus edges dusty with all illustrated plates loosely laid in but all text pages in gatherings of 8 leaves. Half title + engraved titlepage + 48 plates but the first plate lacking its text [ie pages 1 & 2] + 100pp + partial index (index lacks A-N pp101-4 but p105/6 present covering letters N to Z). The plates are not within the collation and loose (as from the publisher) and only some are numbered but numbers are not sequential and several have the same number although the plates are not the same. A married set in very good condition. Second edition, 1758, London. Original full leather boards. Volume 1 has a new spine (sometime in last 50 years) by Edward F. Gruver, Washington, DC. V.1 has bookplate and pencil notations of prior owner and booksellers, no other markings. The first four leaves after the map are loose at the bottom and remain attached at the top. Volume 2 has the original binding, no interior markings of any kind. Royal quarto, green cloth-spined marbled paper-covered boards, with defective gilt-titled spine label, xv (inc. half title, title, advertisement, contents and biography of author) + 99p +[1]p advert for author's Antiquities of Westminster. Some quite heavy scattered foxing, mosty on blank verso of plates and their margins. *The author was known as "Antiquity Smith" - although first published after his death, this book was prepared for press soon after publication in 1817 of his Vagabondiana or Anecdotes of Mendicant Wanderers through the Streets of London. So it was considered to be a continuation - the half title reads "VAGABONDIANA .. Volume II by John Thomas Smith London 1839".

Attractive gilt decoration to the spine. There is cracking / splitting to the top edge of the front board, and it is in danger of becoming detached. Marbled endpapers and ex libris of Yves Refoule. Legrand has inscribed a 12 line poem and gift inscription to his friend Refoule. In addition, there are a few handwritten annotations and corrections to the text of the poems. It would appear that these were corrections made by Legrand. 30 pages. Music hall administrator, critic and historian, a specialist in circus and music-hall performances between the wars, Legrand collaborated closely with Jean-Marcel Chabrier and they produced many works as Andre Legrand Chabrier.
