London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, 1831. VG. 1831 first edition. Maroon full-leather binding, spine has five raised bands and lettered gilt. All edges gilt. Illustrated with engravings; engraved title-page. xviii,275pp. An attempt to prove the validity of the Bible by the scientific study of archaeology and articles of antiquity, such as monuments, sculptures, gems, coins and medals. On the verso of the front endpaper there is a gift inscription from an 84 year old reverend 'to his young friend' dated 1840, with a pin-pricked crucifix (size 52 by 23 mm) affecting this endpaper only; on the recto of the second endpaper there is an inscription 'In remembrance also of a departed friend' (presumably the old reverend); some spotting to preliminary pages; the leather is chipped and rubbed along all edges; the upper and lower outer hinges have 22mm and 17mm cracking at head of spine, the book is very secure; else a very good copy of the SCARCE 1831 first edition.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good.
