Sobre este artículo
Boston: Vail-Ballou Co. Good with no dust jacket. 1897. First Edition. Hardcover. Music; Italy; B&W Illustrations; Folio 13" - 23" tal; First Trade Edition with illustrations by Alexander. Folio, original brown-green cloth with fleur-de-lis pattern stamped in blind, gilt lettering, T. E. G. , 108 photogravure plates from original designs by Alexander including calligraphic lyrics and vignettes, tissue guards, volume designed by Bruce Rogers. Scuffed and worn at edges with tears and chipping at spine ends, upper joint splitting, few small splash spots and paper adhesions, sunning at spine and edges, text still quite good with brief aging, some browning at endpapers, early ink gift inscription at front free endpaper, seminary library bookplate at front pastedown, later owner's ink signature on verso of title page; some related items laid in at front. Rogers (Grolier Club) 17. Warde and Haas 8. One of the earliest design efforts by Rogers, apparently just the second title he designed at Riverside Press where he would become one of the finest book creators of his era. Alexander (1837-1917) met John Ruskin in 1882 and showed him her illustrated manuscript of "Roadside Songs of Tuscany". Ruskin purchased the manuscript (and another by Alexander on an Etrurian tomb) , published the second work in 1883, and "Roadside Songs" in 1884-1885. Ruskin remained friends with Alexander until he died ten years later, and "public demand for Francesca's work continued ... 'Tuscan Songs' was an elaborate and profusely illustrated reproduction of her earlier work" - Paul R. Baker. Warde and Haas also mention a limited edition printed on Japanese paper and bound in full vellum. .
