New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1920. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, American issue being one of 800 copies out of a total 2000 copies printed in American and UK. Illustrated with 24 sepia prints by Rothenstein. Large octavo. Green cloth spine papercovered boards with paper label on front board and spine. Small bookstore label on front pastedown, small stain on top margin of the illustrated page entitled "Sir Edward Elgar", corners rubbed, very good. Reproduces portraits, by William Rothenstein, of George Bernard Shaw. George Russell, J. Conrad, T. Hardy, T.E. Lawrence, M. Beerbohm, A. Bennett, R. Bridges, J. Galsworthy, J. Drinkwater, A. Gide, A.E. Housman, W.H. Hudson, H.G. Wells et al. Each portrait is accompanied by a biographical sketch; in his preface William Rothenstein thanks the subjects, stating: "... I am proud to have had the co-operation of the wise and witty writers of the appreciatory notes..." and he then thanks each subject.
