Nelson and Sons, 1863 Cr.8vo. xiv,15-681pp. frontispiece, title vignette and 6 plates, 9 text-illustrations, 4 maps, appendix. The author was a member of the Scottish Missionary Society who writes about the Slave Trade in the West Indies where he witnessed the 1832 insurrection in Jamaica. He then moved to West Africa and worked at Old Calabar, Bonny, etc. from 1846-1858. With important first-hand descriptions of south-eastern Nigeria before the colonial era. Small stain to margin of frontispiece, title page and first plate, a very nice copy of the first edition in the publisher's green blindstamped cloth.
