on "Turf Club Cairo, Cables Turf Cairo" light blue stationary, 4-1/2" x 7", 2 letters of 2 pages each— (1) dated January 20, 1930, about 260 words, "Dear Mr. Damon…Mr. Huntingdon…in Syria or Palestine…leaving myself for Palestine for 10 days…We were most interested in the establishment of your New York shop [for Middle East antiquities]…changes here — Mr. Henry left for New York last week and Mr. Fitzgerald for India…[son born at the Anglo American Hospital in Cairo]…[wife] contracts 'dengue' fever, S. Leigh"; (2) dated Feb. 23, 1930, about 260 words, "the 'Turkish Towels" arrived safely…my Palestine trip extended to Syria…back in Cairo a few days ago…I am hoping to manage a trip to Constantinople via Syria and Anatolia…forthcoming visit of Queen Marie [Romania] to Egypt…your Bosphorus surroundings…"; letters and signatures authenticated by seller with lifetime guarantee, "S. Leigh" signatures compare with another for typed letter on Vacuum Oil Company letterhead; NOTES: TURF CLUB, CAIRO: an exclusive private club in Cairo used mainly by British and other Western businesspeople and government officials…in January 1952 it was bombed during riots protesting Britain's role in the Suez Canal crisis; VACUUM OIL COMPANY: an American oil company known for its Gargoyle 600-W steam cylinder motor oil. After being taken over by the original Standard Oil Company and then becoming independent again, in 1931 Vacuum Oil merged with the Standard Oil Company of New York, commonly known as 'Socony Oil', to form 'Socony-Vacuum Oil Company' in 1931, later called 'Mobil'.Mobil would merge with the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey to form ExxonMobil in 1999.
