Sergeant Samuel J. Perry [Rank: Colour Sergeant; Regiment: 6th Regiment, The Duke of Connaught's Own Ri es, Vancouver; Medal/Honour/Award: Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal; Private Perry, of Vancouver. A member
of one of the Canadian contingents which fought in the late South African war. He was the winner of King's Prize (1904). In 1904 a private of the DCOR, Sam Perry, became the top rifle shot of the entire Empire, winning the King's Prize at Bisley, England on July 1904. He won with a score of 321 points. At 600 yards he scored 18 Bull's-eyes and two inners and at 1,000 yards he scored forty-eight out of fifty. He thus takes the King's gold medal and a $1,250 purse, having defeated all the best shots of the British Empire. He was the first native born Canadian to attain that honour.
