Bound in publisher's glossy salmon pictorial wrappers, featuring Pauline Baynes illustration of the Fellowship etc. to front cover. [1-14], 15-352 numbered pp. C.J.R.T. map of Middle Earth to pp [10-11]. Mini reviews to inside rear wrapper of The Hobbit, Farmer Giles of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Tree and Leaf, and The Road Goes Ever On and On. Condition notes: moderate wear to wrappers with several small closed tears, folds. Pronounced concavity to spine, plus creasing (see photo) with interior hinge weakening at 180/Voice of Saruman. Former owner's name and date to first page, else no markings noted. Inside covers and pages notably tanned. Per Hammond and Anderson's bibliography, with the second impression, Tolkien made numerous corrections to the text of this edition. The Baynes' illustration is simply charming.
