Two paperback orientation booklets provided to servicemen stationed in Europe. "Short Guide to Great Britain" 5 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches; 38 pp. plus 2 page centerfold map of Great Britain. "Welcome to the Riviera" 6 1/4 x 4 inches, 22 pp. plus folded map of Nice at rear. Rear covers of both booklets show black paper residue; clearly, these two items were once carefully preserved in a scrapbook. Overall good condition, save for back cover damage. "Guide to Great Britain" cautions: "Remember...Britain may look a little shop-worn and grimy to you The British people are anxious to have you know that you are not seeing their country at its best. There's been a war on since 1939." The French guidebook observes "With the arrival of American troops on the 28th of August, 1944, the people of Nice were free again and began to rediscover happiness and gaiety" while also requesting that military personnel "restrain from any action of a destructive nature" during their time in Nice or adjacent communities (Cannes, Antibes, Grasse). The two booklets reflect the need to provide guidance for US military personnel for whom Europe is a new and novel experience. .
