Sobre este artículo

Unbound. Fine. One quarto page on United States Senate printed letterhead, Washington, D.C., dated October 23, 1978. Folded twice for mailing, else near fine. We have some suspicions that the signature is in the hand of a secretary. The letter states, in part: "Thank you for your letter regarding legislation to extend the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. I appreciate having your comments. I fully support actions aimed at insuring the ultimate ratification of this long overdue constitutional amendment." He goes on to explain his role in introducing a resolution to extend the deadline for the ratification of the E. R. A., and its importance to the United States: "I continue to feel that every citizen of our nation will benefit from this renewed pledge to protect our basic rights, liberties, and responsibilities, as well as our dignity as individuals..." The Equal Rights Amendment was written in 1921 by suffragist Alice Paul. It has been introduced in Congress every session since 1923. It passed Congress in 1972, but was not ratified by the necessary thirty-eight states by the July 1982 deadline. In the 107th Congress (2001 - 2002) Kennedy was the chief sponsor of its re-introduction as S. J. Res. 10.
