np: np. VG. (1938 postmark). Card printing reads "Styles Bridges and family gratefully acknowledge with deepest appreciation your kind remembrance and . sympathy", postmarked June 9 1938, 2:30 p.m., Concord, N.H., with 3 cent stamp attached, in black edged envelope torn at top. Styles Bridges was a former N.H. governor, born 9/9/1898 in W. Pembroke, Maine, and died 11/26/1961, American teacher, editor, and Republican Party politician from Concord, staunch supporter of Joseph McCarthy, friend of J. Edgar Hoover whom he allegedly used to spy on political enemies, anti-New Deal and FDR, and called FDR's 1932 election a "ghastly mistake". Stridently conservative, nonetheless one of the strongest supporters of unemployment relief, and in 1935 asked FDR's administration for an additional $20 million for "direct relief" from the Emergency Relief Administration, driven in part by the collapse of the textile industry in New England. .
