Good. W. H. Jackson large format albumen photograph on an original railroad mount. Likely photographed in the 1870s. The original mount has been scotch taped to a modern mount. Photo measures 17" x 21". Original mount measures 25" x 30" and reads: "The Rocky Mountains. Scenes along the line of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad." Title and photographer information is in the negative. Original mount has a 3" x 15" loss to left margin and 1" x 2" loss to right margin and 1" or less chipping along the top edge. Minor scratching and moderate yellowing to photograph. Overall good. This W. H. Jackson photograph depicts a view of the U. S. signal and weather station at the summit of Pikes Peak. The foreground shows a scree-covered mountainside with stone signal station, an outbuilding, a horse-drawn carriage and a man with a box camera. William Henry Jackson was a photographer, painter, and explorer known for his images of the American West. He opened his studio in Denver in 1879 after he had come to Colorado with the Hayden expedition 6 years earlier. The glass negative is found at the Denver Public Library. .
