Hardcover / Original, illustrated cloth with gilt lettering and gilded top edge. Some signs of external wear, including staining and minor tear to boards and slight shakiness to binding. Internally in excellent condition, with text, photographs and map clean and bright. According to the Preface, Treves approached the writing of this travel guide "from the outlook of the unspecialised traveller", as opposed to the types of travel books about Africa that were commonly available at the time, focused on "the point of view of the naturalist, the big-game hunter, the colonist and the missionary". Treves was also the author of many books, including The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences (1923), Surgically Applied Anatomy (1883), The Highways and Byways of Dorset (the county in which he was born) (1906), A Student's Handbook of Surgical Operations (1892), The Land That is Desolate, and The Cradle of the Deep (1908).
