Chauncy, great-grandson of the second president of Harvard, was pastor of the First Church of Christ in Boston for sixty years, beginning in 1727. "He was undoubtedly the most influential clergyman of his time in Boston, and, with the exception of Jonathan Edwards, in all New England, becoming the acknowledged leader of the liberals of his generation" - DAB.
