Boston: John P. Jewett & Company, 1852. 1st Edition Twentieth Thousand. Hardcover. Poor. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, dark brown stamped boards with gilt design on front. The book is in very poor condition but appears complete. Rear board is detached and front board is precariously hanging on by a single tiny thread with several of the pages attached (this should basically be considered being detached as well). Spine has heavy chipping to the entire left side and edges/corners show bumps and wear. The internal binding is roughly in the same condition. Pages are toned due to age and there is spotting and foxing present throughout. There are dampstains present, located on the lower outside section of the pages starting at about page 60. The illustrations have been verified as being present and attached (title page, pages 62, 175, 284). This is an early printing of the first edition with the title page stating "twentieth thousand" and the corrected word used on page 42, line 1, with "spiled" rather than "spilt" which was used in the first state issue. The front end page contains a mid-19th century presentation inscription the signature cannot be determined, no other handwriting found, no bookplates, no library markings. This book is an extremely poor condition and is basically a book-in-a-bag but is a good candidate for re-binding.
Sinopsis
In Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriett Beecher Stowe, the title character Uncle Tom is a long-suffering slave, loyal to both his faith and his master. Presented with an opportunity to escape, he instead chooses to remain in slavery to avoid embarrassing his master. After being sold to a slave trader, Tom suffers brutal treatment and is eventually beaten to death for his refusal to betray his friends — made to represent an ideal of true Christianity. Enormously popular (it was the best-selling novel of the 19th century) and influential, it’s publication in 1852 was instrumental in bringing visibility to the cruel reality of slavery. In more recent years, it has come under considerable criticism for its portrayal of meekness and subservience and the phrase “Uncle Tom” is sometimes used as an epithet for someone seen as overly subservient.

Excellent book to gain empathy and insight into the enslaved pathos, struggle and plight! This book presents well designed ideas to ennoble and elivate the human race as brothers, and sisters of a common God, and Father of us all.

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.
We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.
Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.
