First American Edition, first state with Hold & Williams as publishers, 1873 on the title page and ads dated May 10, 1873. Hardy's second novel, originally published as two volumes in London. This copy showing moderate soiling to the cloth covers, rubbing, spine ends a bit frayed, corners bumped. The decoration and lettering on the cover is still intact and in good shape. The binding is solid. Interior pages are all clean and bright. Overall a very passable copy of this rare book. ; 8vo; 269 pages .
