Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. original red decorated cloth a bit worn and bumped, two volumes bound in one, edition not stated (preface dated December 1859), 326, 330pp, some pencilled remarks at the end of each volume, text block otherwise clean and sound.The undercurrent referred to is the routine savage treatment of the lower orders of society. The author, a middle-class woman, describes and condemns numerous injustices, and urges others in her class to shake themselves out of their ignorance and complacency.
