Of 14 aircraft carriers sunk, only HMS Glorious was sunk by shellfire. HMS Hermes, USS Lexington and IJN Akagi, Hiryu, Kaga and Ryukaku were all sunk by aircraft. HMS Courageous, Ark Royal, Eagle were lost to submarines, and USS Yorktown and IJN Soryu were both heavily damaged by planes and then sunk by submarines. ""Seabees"" by CDR. E.J. Spaulding, USNR.
