Paris: Imp. Lemercier [for:] Librairie Nouvelle, [nd. but ca. 1850s].. 19 plates and 18 plates. Loose sheets. Images, including captions, ca. 27 x 18.5 cm. Margins vary. Some creasing to the larger margins, two plates exhibit foxing and a couple more show some slight marginal tanning, otherwise very good or better. Decent representation of two of the sub- elements of Gavarni's extended work, which when completed, included 329 lithographic plates. The first element lacks plate 1 of the twenty published, and the second lacks plates 4 and 5 of twenty published (duplicates of 2 and 7 are also present, but not included in the count above). Ray treats the series at some length, describing Thomas Virelogue as "one of Gavarni's most brilliant inspirations," and the work as a whole as "a neglected masterpiece of nineteenth-century French graphic art." Card plates bright but some foxing to the outer edges. Krais & Hoffmann, Germany, 1868; Magnificent hand colored copper engraving of the colossal Macrodontia cervicornis or "Sabertooth Longhorn Beetle," pictured together with 20 additional species of exotic beetle. Macrodontia, native to the South American rain forest, is one of the world’s largest beetles, reaching an adult size of over 8 1/4". An original double plate illustration plate from C.F.A. Kolb’s Naturgeschichte des Tierreichs, published at Stuttgart in 1868. An engraved identification key in the bottom margin lists theLatin binomial and German common name for each beetle pictured. Hinged and matted entirely acid free, ready for framing. Full sheet 13 1/4" x 16", matte window 12 3/4" x 14 1/4", outside matte dimensions 18" x 19 1/2". Fine condition, clean, bright, colors vivid. Scarce.

Sheet size 10 1/2" x 13 1/8", image size 8 1/2" x 11". Pristine, flawless condition. Clean, crisp, bright, colors vivid. A bold image of a signature element of the California landscape by a prominent California watercolorist.

The etching depicts Pierrot in an embrace with a woman, watched from the bushes by Harlequin. The work is signed in pencil by Jean Hardy on the bottom, lower right. Numbered in pencil # 165 of 350. In plate: Paris, copyright Galerie Lutetia. Print is now unframed, in excellent condition, with just the edges showing signs of previous framing. 510 x 610 mm (20 x 24 inches).
