Illustrated edition of Up from Slavery, Black educator and race leader Booker T. Washingtons critically acclaimed autobiography, first published in 1901 and translated into 18 languages.

Washington writes about being born into slavery in Virginia and describes the foundation of the influential Black school in Alabama, the Tuskegee Institute. "The account of Washington's struggles and successes [in Up from Slavery] which he achieved through persistence and self-reliance was influential in interesting men like Andrew Carnegie and Henry H. Rogers in Tuskegee. Royalties from the book were also a source of income for the school." (DANB) 

This 1970 edition is handsomely bound and embellished with 12 full-page illustrations by artist Denver Gillen (1914-1975). Number 371/1500 copies signed by Gillen.
