A complete subscription portfolio of 20 chromolithographs, each 22" x 28", issued in ten monthly installments of 2 prints reproducing orig. watercolors of American birds by Pope with captioned guard leaves reprinting descriptive texts from a variety of sources incl. Alexander Wilson's "American Ornithology" and Audubon's "Birds of America". Each installment bound-in with orig. illus. wrpps., prints tipped-in on larger plates of heavy card, some plates with pigment transfer to opposite leaf, 2 with losses at corner not affecting prints, a few small closed tears to text leaves or wrpps., a few plates sl. chipped at fore edge. Large folio. Three-quarter leather, spine with five raised bands, gilt lettering and gilt stamped bird motif in four compartments, marbled endpapers, corners rubbed and bumped, boards scuffed. New York (Scribner) 1877-1878. Ex-Pierpont Morgan library with bookplate on pastedown. Pope was a well-known commercial illustrator and sportsman who was also responsible for the popular gaming portfolio, Celebrated Dogs of America (1882).
