Kane was a medical doctor and entered the navy in order to travel. He was wounded in the Mexican-American war. He volunteered to join in the rescue mission in 1850-51 in search of Sir John Franklin in the Arctic region. Nine ships spent sixteen months in the Arctic. He would later join another expedition in search of Franklin. This time he would be Commander of the expedition. Bound in publisher's brown pictorial gilt cloth depicting sailing ships, fish and anchor within blind stamped diamond frame, pictorial gilt spine, pale yellow endpapers, upper board has dampstaining to lower corner, plates and a few pages have a stain. For some odd reason, the stain did not got throughout the leaves, very small tear to head. A very good copy.

Edwin DeHaven, and Dr. Elisha Hunt Kane (1820-1857) would serve as cheif medical officer. Kane would actually lead the second Grinnell Expedition, and authored the present work . Unfortunately, Franklin was already dead by the time these expeditions went looking for him, but in both cases these expeditions faced many signficant challenges of their own.

Original ribbed brown percaline cloth with gilt decoration front, debossed borders front, gilt lettering spine with debossed rules, debossed decoration and borders rear (mirroring the front but without gilt), pale yellow EPs (possibly original, but seemingly too thick to be original compared to similar EPs from the period of publication). Rare book and especially rare in the original covers which tend to break down easily with age, the percaline covering becoming very brittle when it dries with age. This example has had the original spine relaid almost seamlessly and had similar very matched to original material restorations at the corner tips. There is cracking at the outside hinges but the hinges are strong and nowhere close to failing. The inside hinges are not cracked and are especially strong.
