Sobre este artículo

Washington, DC, United States Navy, 1855. Two volumes in two. 4to (27.7 x 22.0 cm). 881 [xv, 556; x, 300] pp., three folded engraved maps of Chile, six engraved maps, one chromolithographed plate of an indian chief, four tinted lithographed plates showing views; 15 fine hand-coloured bird plates and 21 lithographic plates of other wildlife, many depicting reptiles (described by Girard), fishes, etc. One very large partly hand-coloured map showing a panoramic view of Santiago. Contemporary uniform half calf over marbled boards, spines with five raised bands and gilt titles. Marbled flyleaves. An important contribution to the (Indian) culture, and the natural history (zoology and geography) of Chile and Argentina. The descriptive part has nice views and maps. The large Appendix F. contains the zoology with description of the mammals by S. F. Baird, birds (many hand-coloured plates), reptiles, fishes, and Crustacea by Charles Girard, and Recent shells by Augustus Gould. There are seven reptile plates (e.g. with a new snake); the molluscs are only listed, but a separate section on fossil shells by Timothy Conrad has new species on two plates. Skilfully rebacked with old spines laid down; rubbing to boards and spine, some text pages foxed, some plates less so but with often inoffensive blind stamps. Nissen ZBI, 1574; Sabin, 27419; Vanzolini I, p. 78.
