Book interior VERY GOOD, Covers Very Good. Sewn binding. Boards and spine are green cloth, lettering is gilt on spine and front. Back cover has slightly bent corners, some edge wear and minor marks from adjacent book on shelf, but no rips or stains. Spine has some edge wear all four sides but no rips, is clean and quite bright, has a few small creases top and bottom. Front cover is same as back cover with a few marks from what looks like black sealing wax. Page edges are tinted, as issued, slightly sunned. Binding is a bit loose. Inside front and back covers have a bit of age darkening, also ink stamp “Property of the B.C. Mountaineering Club”. On ffep is attached the Rules of the B.C. Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) was an English botanist who trained as a printer, but was encouraged to follow his interest in botany after coming to Philadelphia in the early 19th century. He spent much of the rest of his life studying the flora and fauna of the United States, publishing Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada, heading the botanical gardens at Harvard University, and working at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. This is one of several important papers of that were published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. Scarce. In Very Good+ Condition: disbound from a larger volume; final leaf largely detached from text block; minimal foxing; otherwise, clean and bright.

Two volumes bound in one, 12mo, pp (2), 212; (4), 288, lightly age-toned throughout with the occasional page with mild foxing, otherwise very sound internally, contemporary half calf and marbled boards, rubbed, slightly worn at the corners, rebacked at some point with a later calf spine. The Oates-Selborne copy, with the bookplate of Robert Washington Oates, the later presentation labels to the Gilbert White Museum in1955, and the tiny Bibliotecha Oatesiana stamp on the final page. With the earlier bookplate of the surgeon John Wheeley Gough Gutch. [A pirated edition, without illustrations. It seems scarce - I have only been able to trace two other copies from this publisher in libraries. It is curious that two printers seem to have been involved - H. Illustrated with three simple hand-coloured plates, octavo, pp xii, 378, extremely clean and sound inyternally, half calf and marbled boards, raised bands and leather label to the spine, very slight signs of wear. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Charles William Hamilton, 2nd Baronet, and his small neat signature on the title page. [Phillips lived much of his life on the south coast, and gained a national reputation as a landscape gardener. His first plan for the development of a lrge site in Kemp Town, Brighton, was rejected, but the second attempt five years later was accepted. His grandiose Anthaeum project, an elaborate indoor botanical garden topped by "the largest dome in the world", ended in disaster when the structure spectacularly collapsed just before its official opening. Cotton from J. Skan (?). Recently bound in a simple quarter leather and cloth and quite a good bright copy overall.. First Edition. Quarter leather. Good.
