Thomas Hughes, (1822-1896), was a British author, judge and reformer, best known for his semi-autobiographical novel TOM BROWN'S SCHOOL DAYS. He founded the utopian community of Rugby, Tennessee in 1880 primarily to aid the young men from England who did not inherit anything from their families because of the right of primogeniture, which dictated that the oldest son inherited everything. This book is about his travels in Europe and America, which included stays in Rugby among many other places..
