Valleys and Peaks: Kanmuri Matsujiro and Hokari Misuo

Illustrated with 112 black and white photographs by two of Japan's early mountaineer photographers. Text in Japanese and English, titles of photographs in Japanese with an insert containing an English translation key and map. Includes a chronology of mountaineering in Japan, bibliographies of the key actors and describes the climbing and photographic equipment used. Kanmuri Matsujiro was an early mountaineering explorer in Japan. His photos focus on the valleys, rivers, canyons, mountain people and mountain camps, especially in the Valley of the Korobe, from 1925 and 1932. Hokari Misuo was a mountain man, professional photographer and poet. He also engaged in research and published on Banryu, the mountain monk who founded a temple in the mountains during the later Edo period. His photographs of peaks, valleys, frost, ice and one volcanic eruption are artistic and sharp, taken with a camera using large glass plates. His works here span the period from 1924-1941. These works were preserved by the Japanese Alpine Club and have been exhibited at museums and archives. Book is fine, insert has small fold to edge. . Soft Cover. Fine/No Jacket.
