William Byron Mowery is the master of the Mounted Police novel set often in "modern" times with black automatic pistols and airplanes and motor boats. A young man arrives at ex-chief of the Secret Squad of the RCMP Noel Irving's Winnipeg home and involves him in a life and death game of mystery, deceit and murder. But before the young man will reveal much of anything, including his name, he is brutally murdered by someone shooting through the room's window. Enraged by such a heinous act Irving heads for the wilderness where he finds the slain man's sister, and by plane and canoe they track an outlaw band to the edge of the wilderness where finally justice is done. This book reveals just how good a writer Mowery was and places him in a field all by himself when it comes to action, suspense, and just plain old entertainment. An excellent read.
